Planting Hope, Growing Strength

In this heartfelt and inspiring episode of A Happy Cancer Podcast, host Kellie Whitton sits down with Eily Simmer, a pediatric cancer survivor and founder of Eily’s Sunflowers, a nonprofit organization created to bring hope, awareness, and comfort to other young warriors and their families.

At just 14 years old, Eily was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma of the scapula, a rare pediatric bone cancer. Her journey through fourteen rounds of chemotherapy and thirty-one days of proton radiation was grueling — but it also ignited a purpose that would grow into something beautiful. Out of her experience came Eily’s Sunflowers, established by a pediatric cancer warrior to help other pediatric cancer warriors and their families.

Together, Kellie and Eily open up about what it means to face cancer at a young age — from the shock of diagnosis to the emotional and physical challenges of treatment. Eily shares what it’s like to balance school, friendships, and identity while navigating a medical world built for adults. She talks candidly about fear, resilience, and the small gestures of love and understanding that made all the difference along the way.

The conversation also explores how creativity, advocacy, and community can help turn pain into purpose. Eily reflects on building her nonprofit, connecting with other young survivors, and the healing power of giving back. Her story embodies the quote that inspired her organization’s name:

“Sunflowers end up facing the sun, but they go through a lot of dirt to find their way there.” – J.R. Rim

Kellie and Eily remind listeners that even in the most difficult circumstances, there’s light to be found — in connection, compassion, and courage. Their discussion highlights the importance of awareness for pediatric cancer, the strength of family and community, and the enduring belief that hope is an act of strength.

Whether you’re living through treatment, supporting a loved one, or simply seeking a reminder of how resilient the human spirit can be, this episode will leave you inspired to turn toward the light — no matter how much dirt life throws your way.

Listen to “Finding the Light with Eily’s Sunflowers” and discover how hope grows even in the hardest places.
